BEN & NICOLA BIGGIN HALL COUNTRY HOUSE HOTEL BIGGIN-BY-HARTINGTON
On Thursday, the 3rd of May 2012, we had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Ben and Nicola Greenwood at the rural and beautiful Biggin Hall Country House Hotel, set in the heart of the Peak District National Park.
Both being avid climbers and loving the outdoors, Ben and Nicola opted for an outdoor wedding at Biggin Hall, a 17th Century country house set 1000 feet above sea level with views across the valleys and countryside.
We arrived a few hours before the ceremony after setting off early to avoid traffic problems and were immediately welcomed by the hotel staff with tea and coffee (always a way to win me over lol) and chilled out before starting camera preparations in a beautiful drawing room to warm up from the cold outdoors, this was Derbyshire after all. By around 12 noon, the bride had arrived along with a gradual arrival of the guests and eventually the groom and ushers. I got some relaxed shots of the groom and ushers in the lounge, before heading off to the bridal suite for a few shots of Nicola getting ready before the ceremony.
The ceremony itself was really unusual. The brides sister played a Uilleann Pipe for Nicola to walk down the stairs to and she wore an awesome dress, a replica of a dress from the Chronicles of Narnia films. The ceremony was filled with emotion, lots of tissues being passed around the guests and it very easy to photograph the couple and capture their happiness on camera. After the ceremony, we focused on photographing the couple in the beautiful Biggin Hall gardens and gradually introduced family members into shot until we had group shots taken against the rural stonework of the hotel. Meanwhile, Claire my fiancee and assistant photographer, was photographing the guests mingling in the bar and reception area. The guests were all extremely friendly and great fun to photograph.
The wedding was very different from other weddings we have covered. The main reception for the wedding was to be held 2 days later on the Saturday but Ben and Nicola followed the ceremony with drinks in the hotel and cutting and eating of the wedding cake whilst at Biggin Hall. Then a selected few of the guests decided to brave the cold and travel a few miles down the road to the scenic and popular walkers destination of Dove Dale, a beautiful and very small village set in a valley by the river. Ben and Nicola had a lovely picnic by the river with their guests and welcomed us to join them. We even had the added pleasure of two ducks who wanted to join the wedding party.
All in all, it was a very beautiful wedding and we feel honoured to have had the pleasure of photographing them on their big day. We wish them all the best in their new and exciting life together.
